O.P.T.I.O.N.S.
Optional Parameters to Improvise Organized Nascent Sounds

O.P.T.I.O.N.S. is a collection of graphic notation symbols for improvisation. It includes musical elements of pitch, rhythm, volume, shape, and transformation. Very little exact notation is included. Improvisers interpret and organize the individual symbols (written individually on 3 x 5 cards), as well as design rules for performance.

O.P.T.I.O.N.S. includes over 50 graphic notation symbols. A web version is included here. Click on the symbol below to create a sample score. The order will change each time the page is refreshed.

There were two performances of OPTIONS in 2005, in the Los Angeles area. A studio version for 9 piece electro–acoustic ensemble is scheduled for release on the pfMentum label in 2008. A mention of this project is included in Notations21 (2008). It has also been a part of the curriculum for music improvisation workshops at Vancouver Community College, in Canada. Please contact Bruce if you have any questions or observations regarding the O.P.T.I.O.N.S. project.
